Chicago man, 73, fatally shot while walking his dogs

CHICAGO (AP) - Police say a 73-year-old man was fatally shot as he was returning to his Chicago apartment after walking his dogs.

Chicago police spokeswoman Officer Jessica Rocco says police responded to a report of gunshots about 10 a.m. Sunday in the Rogers Park neighborhood and found the man with a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities haven't released his name.

Police were searching for the assailant, who was wearing a mask.

Neighbor Lynda Kaplan tells the Chicago Tribune she was in her apartment when she heard gunshots and ran outside. She says the victim, who was walking two dogs, was "a frail older man. What could anybody possibly have against him?"

Police say the dogs have been turned over to the man's relatives.

The story has been corrected to show that the victim lived in Chicago and not in suburban Chicago.
