Charleston CEO buys company that operates Volvo Car Open

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Charleston businessman Ben Navarro has purchased the company that operates the WTA's Volvo Car Open.

Navarro is the CEO of Sherman Financial Group and was a recent finalist in the sale of the NFL's Carolina Panthers. His purchase of the Charleston Tennis LLC was announced Wednesday. The WTA welcomed Navarro's ownership for its women's only clay court tournament.

A spokeswoman said Wednesday Navarro declined say how much he spent on the acquisition. He said the goal was to continue to grow the event that drew more than 88,000 spectators last year. The 2019 tournament will take place from April 1 to April 7.

No. 2 player in the world, past Volvo champion Caroline Wozniacki, has already committed to the event.
