2 killed in suburban Chicago crash with sheriff's squad car

NILES, Ill. (AP) - Police say two women were killed when a sheriff's squad car crashed into their car in Chicago's northern suburbs.

The two-car crash happened Thursday morning at the intersection of two multi-lane city streets in Niles, causing non-life-threatening injuries to the 47-year-old officer.

Niles police said two women, identified as 64-year-old Halena Lukasik of Chicago and 69-Ludwiga Moskal of Norridge, died from injuries suffered in the crash. Police say the squad car hit the passenger side of the women's car as it went through the intersection.

A Cook County sheriff's spokeswoman says the officer wasn't responding to a call when the crash happened and was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
