Ola Toivonen to join Melbourne Victory
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - A-League champions Melbourne Victory have signed Sweden striker Ola Toivonen on a two-year deal from French club Toulouse.
The 32-year-old World Cup quarter-finalist is reported to have made a handshake agreement with Melbourne and will fly to Australia in the next fortnight to finalize contract details. Toulouse on Thursday announced Toivonen's imminent departure and destination.
Toivonen will be joining a club already substantially boosted by the signing of Japan's Keisuke Honda who he will join in an international forward line.
He started in all of Sweden's matches at the World Cup in Russia, scoring against defending champion Germany to lift his tally to 14 goals in 64 international matches.
"Ola brings proven quality to our attack and he will play a big role in leading our forward line this season," Victory coach Kevin Muscat said.
"He is exactly the kind of player we wanted to recruit. He is an accomplished striker so I'm delighted he's decided to come to Melbourne.
"We still have one visa spot available and we're working hard to add even more quality to our ranks."
