Aurora approves city's first gay pride parade for June

AURORA, Ill. (AP) - The city of Aurora will have its first gay pride parade this June.

Members of the Aurora City Council's Government Operations committee voted Tuesday to allow the parade. The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reports that city procedures specify that the committee makes the final determination on parade permits. The parade will be 1 p.m. June 17.

Members of some Aurora faith groups and residents worried a pride parade might bring nudity or unlawful behavior. Organizers with the group Indivisible Aurora said the parade will be "G-rated" and "family friendly." The group's executive director Chuck Adams said the parade is about "ensuring that every member of the LGBTQ community knows they are an important member of this community."

Adams said the group will cover the full cost of the parade.
