Judge to consider sanctions in ex-Chicago detective's case

CHICAGO (AP) - A federal judge in Chicago says she'll hold a hearing over why the city didn't provide certain reports about a former detective until a wrongful death trial involving him was underway.

The Chicago Tribune reports U.S. District Judge Virginia Kendall said in a Thursday order that she "intends to address the issue that sanctions be imposed." The civil case involving former detective Joseph Frugoli centered on whether he understood he would be protected by an alleged "code of silence" when he drove drunk and got into a crash that killed two men.

Proceedings ended abruptly in December when the city settled amid closing arguments. The judge ordered attorneys to respond by Feb. 21. No hearing date has been set.

The Chicago Law Department didn't have comment on the judge's order.
