Roskam, Hultgren on train that hit dump truck

Suburban U.S. Reps. Peter Roskam and Randy Hultgren were on board a train that struck a dump truck in Virginia en route to a GOP congressional retreat.

Roskam, of Wheaton, and Hultgren, of Plano, were not injured, according to congressional staffers.

There are no reports of serious injuries aboard the train, but CNN is reporting at least one person was killed in the crash.

Roskam's wife Elizabeth along with other congressional spouses, children and aides were also on board at the time of the crash.

"Today's train crash was a shocking tragedy. I am thankful that my wife, Elizabeth, my colleagues and I are safe, but our hearts are heavy for those who have suffered such a grievous loss," Roskam said in the aftermath of the crash. "Those families need our prayers during this difficult time."

A Hultgren spokesman said the congressman was uninjured in the crash.

"Randy was on the train and is not injured. His family is back in Illinois. He asks for prayers for all involved, especially those on the truck and their families," said spokesman Jameson Cunningham.

The Amtrak train was en route to The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia when it collided with the truck near Charlottesville, Virginia. It was carrying members of the House and Senate and some of their spouses and children and aides.

House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin also reportedly was on board.

A person aboard the train, who was granted anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak about the accident, said there did not appear to be any injuries.

Around 11:20 a.m. there was a "very loud bang, crash and lurch and the train appears to be on the tracks," the person said.

The National Transportation Safety Board is sending a team to investigate the crash, according to other media reports.
