400-plus Fort Wayne homes get National Register designation

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - More than 400 homes in a Fort Wayne neighborhood have won a place on the National Register of Historic Places.

The homes in the Lakeside Historic District feature several architectural styles ranging from Craftsman to Colonial Revival.

The residential area was one of the first in Fort Wayne to require uniform street setbacks, utility poles along alleys, trees along curbs, curving streets and a small area set aside for a park.

City historic preservation planner Don Orban tells The Journal Gazette that inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places is significantly different from being designated a local historic preservation district.

He says homes on the National Register aren't subject to review of day-to-day changes. Oban says the designation is more of "an award for best in show."
