It was a tumultuous period in the Chicago area in 1966. More than 500,000 troops were fighting in Vietnam and protests against the war were growing stronger with demonstrations in Chicago.

Some noteworthy events that took place in November 1966, Martin Luther King moved into a dilapidated apartment on the West Side of Chicago starting the Chicago Freedom Movement to fight against poverty with 45,000 showing up for a rally at Soldier Field.

Race riots occurred in Chicago and Waukegan that brought in the National Guard.

The Beatles hold a news conference at the Astor Tower Hotel in Chicago before a concert with guitarist John Lennon apologizing for making the remark "more popular than Jesus," saying, "I didn't mean it as a lousy anti-religious thing." This happened the day after their arrival in America for their final US tour.

In the suburbs, residents enjoyed the Christmas holidays, Hanukkah and winter wonderlands. In this #TBT Gallery, you will get a look back at some of these events from December 1966.
