There were some big events that took place in the Chicago area in 1979. American Airlines Flight 191 crashed after taking off from O'Hare. Also this year, Jane Byrne was elected Chicago's first female mayor.
Some noteworthy events took place in November 1979, including Ronald Reagan's Cicero appearance and Ted Kennedy's stop in Chicago shortly after announcing their bids as candidates for the presidency.
