Joy Ramos, the Elk Grove Village woman charged with striking and killing her 3-year-old son, entered a not-guilty plea Wednesday.

Ramos, through her attorney Emmanuel Andre, entered the plea to first-degree murder charges before Cook County Judge Joel Greenblatt in Rolling Meadows. The medical examiner ruled that the boy's death was caused by abdominal trauma due to assault.

According to prosecutors, Ramos, 22, told police she and her boyfriend brought her son Steven Figueroa to the Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village on Sept. 13 after finding the toddler unresponsive in her boyfriend's presence.

Figueroa died later that day. An autopsy revealed he suffered lacerations to his liver and bruises on his back, head and abdomen.

Ramos' boyfriend has not been charged in Figueroa's death.

If convicted, Ramos faces up to 60 years in prison. She is being held at Cook County jail on no bail.

She next appears in court on Nov. 15.
