Carbondale prepares for August solar eclipse

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - Preparations are under way for a solar eclipse festival in a southern Illinois community that's expected to have one of the longest durations of total darkness.

Several U.S. sites are preparing for the Aug. 21 eclipse which will be visible in the country along a narrow stretch from Oregon to South Carolina. Carbondale will experience roughly 2 minutes and 40 seconds of total darkness.

Officials have estimated about 50,000 people could attend

Carbondale is hosting festivities in the days leading up to the eclipse. The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan reports (http://bit.ly/2rDRg9f ) that city officials have been in talks with promoters for a street festival with musical acts.
