Central Tri-State Tollway fix moving forward
A $4 billion project to widen the Central Tri-State Tollway (I-294) is gaining momentum.
Members of the Illinois tollway's Customer Service and Planning Committee approved a proposal to add a lane in each direction of I-294 between 95th Street in the South Suburbs and Balmoral Avenue in Rosemont. The tentative plan also calls for a "Flex Lane" that could involve using the inside shoulder lane for express buses or traffic in gridlock situations.
Tollway Chairman Robert Schillerstrom said the project wouldn't require raising tolls and will improve gridlock, but it faces opposition. Towns along the I-294 corridor such as Oak Brook are concerned about lowered home values and air pollution.
The full board will consider the proposal Thursday.
