Is there a particular issue that motivates you, and if so, what is it?I am up for Re-Election. Having been on the Library Board for 12 years now, I am totally excited about the planning of our new library building and promoting the services provided to the publicIf you are an incumbent, describe your main contributions. Tell us of important initiatives you've led. If you are a non-incumbent, tell us what contributions you would make.Suggested to Library Board that we consider soliciting contributions from patrons; years later we now have a Library Foundation.I made and contributed to the Library during Sign-Up Week four quilts to raffle off as a promotion to patrons who signed up for a new library card.It has been my desire to promote the library with more Library Trustee presence in the Village. I do this personally by introducing myself to patrons each time I am at or near the Library and inquire as to their likes/dislikes and ask if they are aware of the various services that our library provides, such as on-line reservations, baby/toddler activity bags, video games...Do you have a library card? How long have you had it? How often do you use it?Of course! I have had a library card for my entire residency in Lombard which is 50+ years. I use my library card at least once a week for books, music cd's, dvd movies, and magazines.Space is an issue at many libraries. If that's the case at your library, would your solution be to expand the physical plant or make room by doing away with parts of the collection that technology has made less critical? Explain.Adequate space is definitely a concern. Our referendum passed in the recent November election so we are in the process of planning a new library building to address many issues that our current building is lacking which would provide more space for collections, meeting rooms, technology and future expansion. Our staff has done an excellent job of weeding our book collection so there is space for new acquisitions to be shelved and I believe the public has been able to find what they needed on our shelves. In order to make the most use of the square footage in our building, we did have to make difficult decisions which resulted in our transferring to our local Historical Society donations that were made to our library of items that took up too much needed space. What impact have economic and technological changes had on libraries? How does a library remain relevant? How should its role in the community change?New technology requires cabling and a huge demand on electrical access which is not easy to do in a 50+ year old building when "public computers" and Wi-Fi was not even in daily conversations so how could the architects who planned the building even allow for such technology. A library must keep up with technology. Our staff provides instructions to patrons on how to use smart phones, tablets, computer programs (Word, Excel, Power Point), "the cloud".What other issues, if any, are important to you as a candidate for this office?Convincing the population who strongly believe that the internet provides for all their needs and therefore do not feel there is a need for a physical library; they need to see and acknowledge that their viewpoint is NOT realistic. The library is a viable tool to our public for more than just reading a physical book. Please name one current leader who most inspires you.Unable to pick one whose personal work ethics most inspires me.What is the biggest lesson you learned at home growing up?Love of family and respect for others. If life gave you one do-over, what would you spend it on?traveling more to see the natural beauty of our United States and see how people live in different areasWhat was your favorite subject in school and how did it help you in later life?My joy of reading continues to this day. I can escape in my mind to anywhere on earth/space/ocean to new experiences in history or future. If you could give your children only one piece of advice, what would it be?Be true to yourself
