GE Healthcare said Thursday it is moving hundreds of jobs from Barrington to downtown Chicago.

The exact number of jobs is not being disclosed. The workforce will combine with an existing Chicago office at 500 W. Monroe and will include software engineers, software developers, data scientists and other workers.

"Chicago offers an excellent platform for GE Healthcare to work side-by-side with some of the world's most respected health care institutions, startups, associations and industry thought leaders," GE Healthcare CEO John Flannery said in a statement. "This increased proximity will enable us to frequently collaborate and rapidly co-create digital solutions that can help deliver outcomes for our customers."

In January 2016, GE Healthcare, a subsidiary of General Electric, announced that it would move its headquarters from the United Kingdom to Chicago.

Then in March, GE announced the creation of 160 new jobs in the Chicago area focused on digital advancements in transportation and health care.

The company's Chicago office, which is already the lead office for GE Transportation's Digital Solutions business, will ultimately be occupied by more than 1,000 GE employees.

The company is investing more than $500 million in software by 2018 and currently has about 5,000 software engineers.

The Barrington office in Lake County was leased. GE Capital Auto Financial Services moved to the Barrington building in 1997, with GE Medical Systems Information Technologies in 2006. GE Healthcare will turn the building back over to the landlord at the end of this year, said spokeswoman Kelley Sousa.

GE also has employees in Arlington Heights, Hanover Park, Hoffman Estates, Bedford Park and other Illinois locations. The company has no plans to move these other offices, Sousa said.
