Five luxury vehicles stolen from Libertyville dealership

Police are investigating the theft Sunday night of five luxury vehicles from a Libertyville dealership, one of which later was involved in a high-speed police chase and crash in Wisconsin, authorities said.

Libertyville police Lt. Bill Kinast said officers were called at 11:20 p.m. Sunday after the vehicles were seen speeding away from the Gregory Infiniti dealership on the 1100 block of South Milwaukee Avenue

The thieves smashed a door at the dealership to get in the building, then drove away in a 2016 Infiniti Q50, two 2015 Infiniti Q50s, a 2016 Infiniti Q70 and a 2013 Infiniti G37, Kinast said.

The vehicles later were seen heading north on Interstate 94 toward Wisconsin.

The Racine County sheriff's office in Wisconsin said on its Facebook page the stolen vehicles were spotted by Kenosha County police at 11:36 p.m. Sunday heading north on I-94. The vehicles were operating without lights and traveling fast, passing other vehicles on the shoulder, authorities said.

A Racine deputy was able to get behind one of the slower-moving vehicles and attempted to stop it, but the driver accelerated rapidly to get away.

Police put spike strips down on the highway to slow the vehicle. The SUV hit the spike strip, continued a short distance before hitting another vehicle, then drove into a ditch before stopping. Two male occupants fled the vehicle and escaped.

The thieves were described as being in their midteens, standing 5 feet, 6 inches tall, with short dark hair. One was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, while the other was wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt.

The vehicle struck by the stolen SUV was carrying two people. Neither was seriously hurt, officials said.

The pursuit in Racine County lasted 4.2 miles with speeds reaching 115 mph, authorities said. I-94 was closed in Racine County for about two hours while the crash was investigated, authorities said.
