Large, open family room seems 'awkward'

This room is a blank slate. It's been that way for 12 years.

It's an awkward room to place furniture. I'm sure a designer would have some ideas!

Design By Treetime Christmas Creations

Budget: $3,000

Holiday decorations can be a great way to give a room a quick face-lift. The lights and greenery create a warm atmosphere great for hosting family and friends or just quiet reflection.

Suggestions:

• We would place a potted cascading cypress on the floor near the sofa. The cascading cypress is a full mix of weeping cypress sprigs interspersed with long-needle pines and pre-lit with clear lights. It comes with a great copper urn, but the greenery can also be removed and placed in your own outdoor urn for a great porch display. We added some greenery and berry picks to add a pop of color.

• The wall behind the sofa is a great spot to hang a wreath. We used a Jackson Pine pre-lit wreath and added an indoor/outdoor bow, red berries and some gold picks.

• A sleigh filled with trim by the window complete the decor. It features a small platinum pre-lit Christmas tree, pre-lit rattan ball, greenery, ribbon and birch branches. You can use small Christmas trees in many creative ways to make your displays your own. Think out of the box.

• A needlepoint pillow featuring a bike with a dog in the basket adds a special touch to the sofa.

A sleigh filled with trim makes a wonderful window display.
A needlepoint bike pillow helps complete the decor.
Wreaths are commonly hung over the mantel or on a door, but the wall behind the sofa is also a great spot.
