Man charged with killing woman wants rape charge dismissed

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Attorneys for a southern Indiana man accused of killing his former girlfriend and eating parts of her body have asked that a rape charge against him be dropped.

Joseph Oberhansley was in court Thursday in Jeffersonville. The Jeffersonville man is charged with murder, rape and abuse of a corpse in the September 2014 slaying of 46-year-old Tammy Jo Blanton. He could be sentenced to death if convicted.

The News and Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/2enfHPV ) Oberhansley's attorney argues the rape charge isn't specific enough. Another Oberhansley attorney asked the judge to suppress an interview Oberhansley gave police admitting he stabbed Blanton.

Oberhansley's trial has been pushed back to June 2017. The judge will review briefs the attorneys file in support of their requests. Prosecutors will have a chance to respond.
