Endorsements: Skala, Wimmer for McHenry County Board's District 5

Candidates for McHenry County's District 5 paint a distressing picture of the current county board, citing a lack of civility and preparation on the part of some members. Residents deserve better.

In District 5, incumbent Michael Skala makes an impressive case for keeping him in office. He has a firm grasp on the issues and an important role as chairman of the finance committee. The Huntley resident also understands the bigger picture when it comes to balancing the desire for growth and the need to protect McHenry County's resources, including its limited water supply. He earns our support.

Fellow Republican Andy Snarski did not partipate in endorsement interviews, but Democrats Paula Yensen and Alex Wimmer are both strong candidates for the second seat. Yensen, a Lake in the Hills trustee, served on the county board in the past, and Wimmer's background as a litigation attorney would serve him well. At 29, Wimmer brings much-need new blood and a fresh perspective. We endorse Wimmer and Skala.
