Students showed disrespect to nation, principles

I was a football official at the last Powder Puff Football game event at Grayslake North High School on Sept. 28. I have been an official for the Powder Puff Football games the last several years at both the North and Central campuses.

I do this as a service to the schools and community on a voluntary basis. I do not receive, expect, or accept any compensation for my time.

Prior to the game, we were instructed to rise for the national anthem. Prior to the conclusion of our national anthem, the Senior Powder Puff Team took one step forward, raising their right fists in the air in defiance to our flag and what it stands for. T

o show disrespect to our flag and country shows a disregard to laws and rules that apply to maintain peace and order. It shows disrespect for the police, rescue and military of this country serving to maintain the liberties we share. If their view is social injustice, it too is misplaced.

I did not feel the pride of their independence that night. What I felt was embarrassment and shame that our schools allow an offensive display by representatives of their senior class.

I have been a football official for several years for several hundred contests ranging from youth football to semipro. This is not the forum to express or display political views. With the 9/11 anniversary just passing, there were several events to honor the police, rescue, and military of this country in a respectful way.

It is too bad the school missed the opportunity to promote that. As an IHSA official, I will never volunteer or return to officiate any Powder Puff Football games for Grayslake North High School.
