Albright Theatre to stage 'The Other Place'

The Albright Theatre in Batavia is proud to present "The Other Place" by Sharr White, a drama about love, loss, memory and perception.

Juliana Smithton is a successful neurologist and researcher. Her life turns chaotic when her husband files for divorce, her relationship with her daughter crumbles and her health falls into question.

But is everything really as it seems? Bit by bit, this brilliantly written play unfolds as Juliana's facts blur with fiction, her past collides with her present and the elusive truth begins to surface.

"I was drawn to direct this show when I read it because of the way the story is told," said director Jennifer Ring of Batavia.

"It's not just laid out for you in a straight line. Instead, the script is a fast-paced blending of moments where memories of the past crash into the present. I was drawn to the challenge of bringing the show to life and making those transitions happen live on stage in a way that the audience can follow."

Lori Rohr of Palatine takes on the role of Juliana Smithton, Rhys Read of Des Plaines plays Juliana's husband, Dr. Smithton, and rounding out the cast, playing multiple roles each, are Jess Santrock of Naperville as The Woman and Tom Holtquist of Montgomery as The Man.

The show is supported by producer Shelly Rolf of Geneva, stage manager Jennifer Richardson of Batavia and projectionist Cass Hanlin of Batavia.

"Being able to work intimately with a small cast, and one that is as talented as this group, is what makes me want to direct," Ring said.

"This is a challenging script because it jumps back and forth in time. The cast has to be able to jump from one emotion to the next without any time for transition. I was very lucky in finding the right people to take on these characters. Working with this group has been a pleasure."

Performance dates for "The Other Place" are Oct. 28, 29, 30 and Nov. 4, 5, 6, 11 and 12. Rated PG 13. Performance times are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays 2 p.m. The Albright Theatre Company is at 100 N. Island Ave. (3rd floor of the Batavia Government Building), Batavia.

Tickets are $15 for adults; $12 for students/seniors. Reservations are highly recommended, call (630) 406-8838.
