Learn to identify trees at nature program

Learn to identify trees in the fall during a "Learn from the Experts" nature program from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at Freeman Kame Forest Preserve in Gilberts.

Participants will learn the basics of tree identification and gain experience in identifying trees during "Fall Tree Identification."

This class will begin with an introduction to basic plant morphology, needed for the tree identification. They will take a walk on the wooded trails to learn the common hardwood trees. Attendees will learn several methods of tree identification during the program.

The fee is $10 per person. Advance registration is required. Register by calling (630) 444-3190 or email programs@kaneforest.com.

This program will take place at Freeman Kame Forest Preserve, 40W346 Freeman Road, Gilberts.

The "Learn from the Experts" programs are for ages 18 or older. This program series is co-sponsored by the Forest Preserve District of Kane County and the St. Charles and Geneva park districts.

The next program will be "Bridging Cultures on Sacred Land" from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, at Stephen Persinger Recreation Center, 3507 Kaneville Road in Geneva. The fee is $20.

Acclaimed author Kent Nerburn will speak about chasms and connections between Native Americans and nonnative cultures in the United States. In this presentation, Nerburn will weave spiritual values, the sacredness of land, and Native American perspectives on the changing world.

Nerburn has garnered numerous awards for his books, including: "Neither Wolf Nor Dog," "The Wolf at Twilight" and "The Girl Who Sang to the Buffalo."
