Endorsement: Winger in House District 45

Incumbent Republican Christine Winger, a former Wood Dale City Council member, is seeking her second legislative term in House District 45. She is challenged by Cynthia Borbas, an IT consultant from Carol Stream and a Democrat making her first bid for office.

Winger's background as an investment adviser and her work with other mayors in her district allowed her to be well-prepared for the challenges of Springfield. We see no reason to change that course. Winger favors introduction of a defined contribution system, such as a 401(k), to replace pensions for new state employees. She also prefers careful, specific cuts rather than across-the-board slashing while improving the business climate as a way to improve state finances.

She also strikes us as having the right temperament to work collaboratively across the aisle and not engage in the combative partisan politics of the General Assembly.

Borbas, meanwhile, is a quality candidate, well-spoken and knowledgeable, especially for a non-incumbent. Many of her views are not incompatible with ones we've supported, such as redistricting reform. She also supports a blanket property tax freeze and a "millionaires' tax" - a familiar Democrat mantra - though she offers no specifics on how that would work. We endorse Winger.
