Constitution Week Not Forgotten at Embers!

"It is every Americans' right and obligation to read and interpret the Constitution for himself." - Thomas Jefferson.

60 years have passed since Congress first asked President Eisenhower to recognize September 17th - 23rd as 'Constitution Week'. Although often overlooked, these 7 days provide an excellent opportunity for Americans to reflect upon the unique liberties and opportunities afforded to our country.

The staff at Embers Elementary School in Niles celebrated the week by hosting special learning events at each grade level. Kindergarteners learned about the significance of our flag and the Liberty Bell, while first graders were taught about the flag's symbolic meaning. Embers' 2nd and 4th graders created their own 'classroom constitution', complete with each student's 'John Hancock' signature. The third grade class studied the Constitution's Preamble and the Bill of Rights. Fifth grade interpreted the Preamble after familiarizing themselves with the intent and importance of the document, and then read aloud the preamble together during a special school-wide assembly held at the end of the week.

During this school gathering, the entire class body recited the Pledge of Allegiance, and select student representatives from each grade level gave brief presentations on what they had learned about the Constitution during the week. The special assembly concluded by everyone singing "God Bless America", led by Ember's music director, Mrs. Pasowicz.
