Boys golf: Jacobs' Tighe 2nd at Fox Valley Conference meet

The cool and blustery conditions were a hindrance to many golfers Thursday, but not to Jacobs sophomore Garrett Tighe.

Tighe fired a 5-over par 77 to take second place honors in the Fox Valley Conference boys golf tournament at Foxford Hills in Cary.

Prairie Ridge's Ethan Farnham won the gold medal for the meet with a 1-over 73, leading the Wolves to a 322 team total and a clean sweep of the league for the 2016 season.

"The wind was really strong," said Tighe. "The greens had a lot of ball marks, were fast and rolled a little untrue at times but I came prepared. I knew it was going to be cold and I just wanted to keep up with my group."

Tighe shot a 41 on the front nine then came back with a 36 on the back.

"On the front I was hitting my driver really bad," he said. "I figured it out on the back and hit all nine greens and two-putted them all."

Crystal Lake South used matching 79s from Nate Zacher and Casey Hunter to finish at 329 and swipe second place in the tournament and overall league standings from Jacobs.

"They played phenomenal today," said South coach Curt Wadlington of his team.

The Gators also counted an 85 from John Lishchynsky and an 86 from Griffen Coakley.

Cary-Grove finished third in the tournament with a 335, led by an 84 from Ben Stogis. Colin Bailey added an 85 for the Trojans, Zach Beaugureau had an 86 and Jacob Glaysher and Trevor Beaugureau each shot 89s.

Jacobs was able to take third place overall in the league. The Golden Eagles came in with 2 points after going 7-1 in dual meets and even though their 342 Thursday put them in fourth place in the tournament, they nosed out Cary-Grove by 1 point for third place overall.

Adding to Tighe's total for Jacobs Thursday were Daniel Leitner (85), Riley Coakley (89) and Jarod Gray (91).

Prairie Ridge, which was 8-0 in FVC dual meets, counted a 79 from Cameron Karney, 81 from Joe Thompson and 89 from James Michaelson in its winning total.

McHenry (348), Hampshire (355), Dundee-Crown (358), Crystal Lake Central (367) and Huntley (370) rounded out the nine-team field.

JP Anderson had an 83 to lead Dundee-Crown, placing him ninth individually. Mark Spitzer (84) led Hampshire and Michael Runsey (89) was Huntley's low scorer.

All the FVC teams except McHenry will compete in the Class 3A Huntley regional at Pinecrest next Tuesday.
