Lake County agency commemorates Sept. 11 with volunteer service
Submitted by the Community Action Partnership of Lake County
Lake County residents stepped up in service to mark the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks for the Sept. 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. RSVP Senior Volunteer Program, in conjunction with the Army Retiree Office at Fort Sheridan, started the Red Box campaign by distributing red boxes around Lake County to collect donations for distribution to veterans living at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center for their personal use at the retail store or cafeteria for necessities and comfort items, joining hundreds of thousands of Americans across the country in volunteer service.
The campaign will run through Nov. 7. RSVP volunteers will collect donations to purchase enough booklets to support 300 veterans in residential care. The check presentation will be Nov. 10 in honor of Veterans Day, Nov. 11.
"Sept. 11 is a day of history, emotion, and reflection," said Mary Lockhart White, the executive director/CEO of Community Action Partnership of Lake County. "For many Americans it is also a day of service that provides an opportunity to join neighbors and local leaders in volunteer service to rekindle the compassion and unity shown on that day."
Sept. 11 was designated a national day of service by the 2009 Kennedy Serve America Act. The Corporation for National and Community Service leads the annual event, working with 9/11 Day and hundreds of nonprofit groups, faith-based organizations, schools and businesses nationwide.
