Carpentersville man arrested at airport, charged with July shooting

A 19-year-old Carpentersville man wanted in connection to a July shooting in Elgin was arrested at O'Hare International Airport this week as he attempted to leave the state.

Oscar S. Sanchez, formerly of the 300 block of Hendee Street in Elgin, was being held in Cook County jail after bail was set at $250,000 Thursday morning, jail records show.

Elgin gang unit officers arrested Sanchez about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the airport as he was attempting to board a flight to Maryland, Cmdr. Al Young said.

Sanchez was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm in July 7 shooting on the 1200 block of Spruce Lane in Elgin.

A residence was struck multiple times by gunfire with no injuries to the occupants of the home. Gang unit detectives later identified Sanchez as a suspect, Young said.

"We thank the Elgin community for its patience while our officers tirelessly investigated this crime to ensure the right person was arrested and charged," Police Chief Jeff Swoboda said in a news release.
