Long Grove students help keep Palatine police dog safe

A group of seven students from Woodlawn Middle School in Long Grove raised money to protect perhaps the cutest member of the Palatine Police Department.

The students presented a bulletproof vest to Puma, the department's police dog, and his human partner, officer Joe Christians, during the Palatine village council meeting Monday night.

Mayor Jim Schwantz said the students met Puma and Christians during a "CSI" course at Harper College. Schwantz thanked the students for seizing the opportunity to help out, even though they weren't Palatine residents.

"We need more people, young people, like yourselves who are willing to step in and help where you see the opportunity," Schwantz said. "We thank you for that."

The bulletproof vest cost $800.
