Police identify man killed fleeing Bartlett hit-and-run

Officials have identified a man struck and killed by a van in Bartlett Tuesday morning as 40-year-old Richard Lee Stark of Elgin.

He apparently had left the scene of another accident before he was hit, police said.

The Cook County medical examiner's office determined Lee's death to be accidental - the result of the multiple injuries he suffered when struck by the vehicle.

However, the Bartlett police investigation of both collisions in which Lee was involved around 6:40 a.m. Tuesday still await the results of toxicology tests, Sgt. Geoff Pretkelis said Friday.

No other drivers have been cited, he added.

Police have said they believe Lee was the driver of a black 1991 GMC 1500 going east on Lake Street near Oak Avenue when it struck three other vehicles.

Pretkelis said it appeared those three vehicles were sideswiped by the GMC 1500 as Lee attempted to drive between one in the left lane and the other two in the right lane.

Lee continued east on Lake Street before he parked his car on the median several blocks away near Park Avenue, police said.

Lee was struck by a white 2000 Ford E350 van traveling west on Lake Street after he attempted to flee the vehicle north across the westbound lanes.

The driver of the van was not injured, police said.

Paramedics took Lee to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, where he was pronounced dead at 7:05 a.m.
