Fire marshal investigating after 2 killed in house explosion

FAIRMOUNT, Ill. (AP) - The Vermilion County coroner's office says two people killed found dead after an explosion leveled a home were a 77-year-old woman and 64-year-old man.

Coroner Peggy Johnson said in a news release Wednesday that Delores Sapp and Floyd L. Walton were killed by the force of the blast Tuesday at the house in Fairmount. The town of 620 people is about 25 miles east of Champaign.

Fairmount Fire Chief Dave Ferber says the blast "blew the house completely apart."

Ferber says the explosion left little of the home but debris and a basement that was 5-feet deep in rubble. A column of smoke could be seen for miles.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal's office is investigating the cause.
