Palatine police investigating rash of home burglaries

Palatine police are investigating a recent rash of home burglaries on the north side of the village.

In the majority of cases, the burglar or burglars got into houses and apartments through unlocked windows between 9 p.m. and midnight, and stole small items of value, such as jewelry and cash, police said.

North side residents reported four burglaries and one attempted burglary on Friday alone, all of which remain under investigation, according to police reports.

In response to the burglaries, police are offering residents tips to avoid being a victim. Police recommend locking all windows, doors and sliding doors before leaving home, and keeping doors locked even when home.

Residents can create the appearance that someone is home at all times by setting lights on timers to turn on before the sun sets, police said, adding that residents should immediately report suspicious people, vehicles and incidents.
