St. Charles man killed in rollover crash

A 35-year-old man from St. Charles was killed in a rollover crash in an unincorporated area in Virgil Township early Saturday morning, authorities said.

David Drewes, a front-seat passenger in a 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan SUV, was pronounced dead at the scene, the Kane County sheriff's office said.

The driver, a 39-year-old man from Maple Park, was initially rushed to Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb but was later flown to Rockford Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. The driver and a back-seat passenger, a 36-year-old woman from Maple Park, were recently married, the sheriff's office said.

The woman, who is the sister of Drewes, was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital with minor injuries, the sheriff's office said.

About 2:10 a.m., sheriff's deputies were called to the crash near Route 64 and Fabris Road. The SUV was traveling east on Route 64 when it apparently failed to negotiate a curve and left the road on the south side near Fabris, the sheriff's office said.

The SUV rolled over, and the driver and Drewes - neither of whom were wearing seat belts - may have been ejected from the vehicle, the sheriff's office said.

The woman seated in the back seat was wearing a seat belt and was not ejected from the vehicle.

The crash remains under investigation by sheriff's deputies and members of the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team. No citations have been issued.

Route 64 was closed between Peplow and Fabris roads for about three hours while the crash was investigated.
