Hundreds served at 60th Cornfest in Rolling Meadows

For the 60th year in a row, the Community Church of Rolling Meadows congregation and members of the community hosted hundreds of hungry revelers at Cornfest on Saturday.

Pastor Rande Smith said putting on the event is something that every member of the church helps out in.

"All the other churches I've been at have had events that get 50 percent turnout or 25 percent turnout from the congregation," said Smith, between carrying a tray of brats from the grills to the servers. "It is a wonderful church event."

Along with their choice of a burger, hot dog or brat, eaters got a serving of watermelon, a drink and as much corn-on-the-cob as they wanted.

The volunteers employed a system that has been perfected over the decades to shuck, boil, butter and serve hundreds of ears of corn.

The diners were serenaded by the Northwest Community Band's Dixie Group.

Outside the roped off dining area, dozens of arts and crafts vendors sold their wares, which included artisan-made jewelry, clothes, decorations, crafts and light switch covers.

The church is at the northeast corner of Kirchoff Road and Meadow Drive in Rolling Meadows.
