Police: Elgin man charged after 7-hour standoff

An Elgin man will appear in bond court Sunday on misdemeanor charges stemming from a standoff with police that ended early Saturday, authorities said.

Mace D. Davis, 57, of the 200 block of National Street, was charged with aggravated assault of a victim over 60 years of age, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and disorderly conduct.

Officers were called to the 200 block of National Street about 5:08 p.m. Friday for a report of a person with a firearm who had threatened someone in his home, Elgin police said.

Upon arrival, police met with a woman who said she and Davis had argued, and Davis had threatened to shoot her with what she believed was a rifle.

She escaped and was not injured, police said.

A tactical response team arrived in the area as officers tried to find Davis, police said.

"Mr. Davis made statements to officers via telephone that he was not going to be arrested, and that he was armed with several knives and that he would harm officers if they attempted to make contact with him," police said in a news release.

Davis also threatened to release "a vicious dog" on SWAT officers, police said.

Officers continued to try to negotiate with Davis, but he refused to cooperate, police said, and officers used less-lethal sponge rounds to incapacitate him before he was taken into custody about 12:17 a.m. Saturday - more than seven hours after police were called.

Davis was taken by ambulance to Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin and was later released to police. He is due in Kane County bond court Sunday morning.
