Two charged with taking hostage inside Cook County jail

The Cook County sheriff's office has identified the detainees charged with taking control of their maximum security housing tier in the Cook County jail on Thursday, and taking another detainee hostage. Martin Alvarado, 24, and Cordarryl Stevenson, 27, were taken into custody at about 7:30 p.m. Thursday, three hours after sheriff's police say they took control of their housing tier, covered the floor with soapy water and obscured the fixed cameras on the tier before tearing them down completely. One injured detainee was taken to the hospital. Alvarado has been in Cook County Jail custody since April 2015 on a murder charge; Stevenson has been in custody since September 2014 on charges of armed robbery and aggravated vehicular hijacking.
