Two firefighters hospitalized after blaze at Crystal Lake Central

A fire at Crystal Lake Central High School on Wednesday afternoon sent two firefighters to the hospital, officials said.

The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department was called to the high school around 3:40 p.m. after a passer-by noticed smoke, according to a news release.

The first units on the scene found thick, black smoke coming out of the roof of the school, the release said. The fire was contained to the roof and didn't extend into the building.

Two Crystal Lake firefighters were taken to Centegra Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry for heat exhaustion.

In all, 14 fire departments, the Salvation Army and McHenry County Emergency Management Agency assisted at the scene.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
