6-year-old boy dies after I-88 crash near Aurora

A 6-year-old boy died Monday night from injuries he suffered in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 88 near Aurora, Illinois State Police said.

The boy was a passenger in a 2007 Dodge Durango that was traveling west on I-88 about 6:55 p.m. when it was involved in a crash with a westbound 2009 Nissan Murano near milepost 115. Both vehicles flipped over as a result of the impact.

The boy was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The driver of the Durango, Paula P. Martinez, 32, of Des Moines, Iowa, and another child passenger were taken to Aurora's Provena Mercy Medical Center before they were transferred to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood with injuries that are not life-threatening, according to Illinois State Police District 15 Sgt. Greg Minx.

There were five other people in the Durango, Minx said.

The driver and sole occupant of the Murano, Renee A. Scott, 30, of Oak Park was taken to Provena Mercy Medical Center in Aurora with injuries that were not life-threatening, Minx said.

The Aurora Fire Department also responded to the crash.

A state police crash reconstruction officer has been assigned to the case, which remains under investigation, authorities said.
