State police ID trooper who shot Anderson robbery suspect

ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) - An Indiana trooper who happened upon an armed robbery at a central Indiana convenience store on Monday shot and wounded the fleeing suspect who pointed a gun at him, state police said.

Sgt. Anthony Emery was on-duty and in full uniform when he stopped at a Ricker's convenience store in Anderson about 8:20 a.m. Clerks reported the store had just been robbed and pointed at a man getting into his car, a 2002 Jaguar, police said.

Emery ordered the 22-year-old suspect, Ricky B. Zimmerman of Pendleton, to stop, but he continued to leave the area and pointed a handgun at Emery through a car window, according to police. Emery fired a shot that struck both of the suspect's wrists, police said.

Zimmerman's car continued across a street and struck another car before coming to a stop, police said. Neither the other driver nor Emery was injured. Zimmerman was taken to a hospital with injuries that weren't believed to be life-threatening, police said.

Charges against Zimmerman were pending, police said. It was unclear whether Zimmerman had an attorney; a message left at a home phone number listed for a Richard Zimmerman in Pendleton wasn't immediately returned.

A handgun and money believed to have been taken in the store robbery were recovered at the scene, police said.

Emery was on administrative duty until the investigation is completed, police said.
