Five-car pileup in Buffalo Grove

Shortly after being rear-ended in a crash in Long Grove, a driver smashed into four vehicles waiting to turn at an intersection in Buffalo Grove late Sunday morning, police said. She was extricated from her vehicle and taken to a hospital.

Buffalo Grove police said the woman's Acura had been rear-ended around 11 a.m. at McHenry Road and Route 53.

Police said she then fled the accident scene, proceeding southeast on McHenry Road.

As she was making a turn on to southbound Arlington Heights Road from a dedicated turn lane, she drove the vehicle over the right-turn island and into the two left-turn lanes where the four vehicles were stopped and waiting to turn from Arlington Heights Road onto McHenry Road, smashing all four vehicles.

Police said witnesses stated the driver was moving at a high rate of speed.

The woman was taken to Northwest Community Hospital and was conscious, police said.

Police said two cars were still drivable after the accident - three had to be towed from the scene.

Police said the roads were clear by 12:56 p.m.
