Tree planted 20 years ago to be rededicated to slain student
NAUVOO, Ill. (AP) - A tree planted in memory of a Nauvoo girl who was killed 20 years ago will be rededicated with a plaque bearing her name.
The (Quincy) Herald-Whig reports (http://bit.ly/2a6G7Vx ) that family and friends of the late Lonna Sloop will gather Sunday with teachers at Lonna's former school, Nauvoo-Colusa Elementary, to rededicate the tree with a plaque and a newly added bench. It would have been Lonna's 33rd birthday.
Lonna was murdered July 9, 1996, in a house near Burnside. Daniel Ramsey is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for her murder and those of Laura Marson of Basco; Sloop's sister, Rachel Sloop; and two toddlers.
Lonna's classmates in the now-sold school building paid tribute to her with the tree-planting shortly after her death.
