Des Plaines garage fire causes $30,000 in damage

A garage fire in the 1500 block of S. River Road in Des Plaines Tuesday caused $30,000 in damage and left nobody injured, according to Des Plaines Fire Chief Alan Wax.

Firefighters arrived on the scene at 11:13 a.m. to find the fire was "well advanced" throughout the garage. Crews extinguished the main body of the fire in two minutes, and police shut down River Road between Oakton Street and Algonquin Road for about an hour, according to Wax.

"Kudos and thanks to Alderman (Mike) Charewicz, who was driving nearby and saw the smoke, and who stopped to assist the youth that was home and the neighbor," Wax said in an email.

The caused of the fire is under investigation.
