Help Ward-Off Dementia and Alzheimer's: BACOA to offer brain fitness program

Register today for the Barrington Area Council on Aging's Total Memory Workout, a six-week course focused on brain fitness and health, slated for Mondays, July 11 through Aug. 15, from 1-3:30 p.m. at BACOA's office, 6000 Garlands Lane, Suite 100, Barrington. Cost is $35 and includes the book "Total Memory Workout; 8 Easy Steps to Maximum Memory Fitness."

A special grant from the Dr. Scholl Foundation helps support this class, which addresses everything from how one's memory works to organizational tools and memorization strategies.

"Studies over the last decade have shown the benefits of mental skills training along with exercise, nutrition and lifestyle choice can help in preserving brain health," said Joyce Palmquist, executive director of BACOA. "Classes such as this can help adults improve their memory."

The course is recommended for anyone age 50 and older. Specially-trained memory facilitators will be conducting the class.

To register or for more information, call Bonnie Scherkenbach or Sue McNamara at (847) 381-5030.
