West Nile detected in Lake County

A batch of mosquitoes sampled June 23 in Highland Park has tested positive for West Nile virus, according to the Lake County Health Department, the first confirmed indicator of the disease's presence in Lake County this year. In 2015, 68 batches of mosquitoes and one bird tested positive for the virus and five human cases were reported in Lake County. Most people infected with the virus have no symptoms but some may experience muscle weakness, inflammation of the brain (encephalitis), stiff neck, stupor, disorientation, tremors, convulsions, paralysis, coma or death within three to 15 days of being bitten by an infected mosquito.
