Man accused of killing Gary officer faces new charges

CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) - Prosecutors have filed additional charges against a man accused of killing of a Gary police officer.

They filed charges of intimidation, battery and carrying a handgun without a license Wednesday against 27-year-old Carl Blount. He's also charged with murder in the July 6, 2014, shooting death of Patrolman Jeffrey Westerfield.

The (Munster) Times reports (http://bit.ly/294awjq ) the new charges stem from a domestic violence incident that occurred before the slaying. Prosecutors believe Westerfield was searching for Blount when he was shot.

Defense attorneys waived the reading of the new charges and asked the judge to enter not guilty pleas for Blount. He previously pleaded not guilty to the murder charge.

The Lake County prosecutor's office is seeking the death penalty against Blount. He's scheduled to go on trial Feb. 6.
