Cook County voters will decide Recorder of Deeds future on November ballot

A historic referendum calling for the elimination of the Cook County Recorder of Deeds office, and merging it with the Cook County Clerk's office will be on the November ballot in Cook County. The Cook County Board of Commissioners on Wednesday voted 10-5 to put the binding initiative on the Nov. 8 general election ballot. If it passes by a simple majority, the offices will be consolidated by the end of 2020. Commissioner John Fritchey proposed the referendum and said it would not only save close to $1 million annually, "but will make getting records from the county a less cumbersome and more user-friendly experience." Right now, eight of the nation's 10 largest counties have already combined the offices - Cook County would be the ninth.
