Too bad Clintons seem headed for return

Regarding the 2016 presidential election, (with a nod to Bob Dylan), you don't have to be a weatherman to see which way the wind is blowing.

Hillary Clinton is widening the spread over Donald Trump in the average of all presidential preference polls. It's now solidly over six points and will likely increase as her campaign begins to spend hundreds of millions to expose his deeply flawed character, his abysmal lack of knowledge and his unseemly business history.

Clinton's lead is likely to zoom well into high double digits before the Republican Convention meets on July 18. That's because the FBI (statements to the contrary notwithstanding) wants to wrap up its investigation of Clinton's email, private server and Foundation activities before the nominating conventions.

The political climate in Washington, if nothing else, dictates that the bureau will almost certainly report that, though those activities are irregular and inappropriate, they do not rise to the standard that warrants a criminal referral to the Justice Department.

At that point, the Republican convention delegates will realize that the party doesn't have a chance of capturing the presidency, that their Senate majority is lost and that their only hope to salvage their House majority will be to dissociate from Trump, perhaps even going so far as to rewrite the convention rules (perfectly legal) to find a way for the party to dump him in favor of some anodyne candidate.

What a delicious, apt irony it would be for the former host of "The Apprentice," to hear "You're fired" before the hugest U.S. television audience ever to watch a political convention. It's just too bad that the party's dalliance with this narcissistic, crude, shallow megalomaniac will have placed the country once again in the hands of the ethically and truthfully challenged Clintons.
