Liggins retrial in Iowa girl's 1990 death set for February

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) - The retrial of an Illinois man charged with the 1990 killing of a 9-year-old girl in eastern Iowa has been set for next year.

The Quad-City Times reports (http://bit.ly/291BWed ) that 54-year-old Stanley Liggins will again go to trial on Feb. 6.

Juries twice convicted Liggins in the death of Jennifer Lewis, who disappeared from her Rock Island, Illinois, neighborhood. Investigators say she was raped and strangled. Her body was wrapped in a plastic bag and set on fire near a Davenport elementary school.

The Iowa Supreme Court overturned his 1993 conviction. In November 2013, the Iowa Court of Appeals vacated Liggins' second conviction and ordered a new trial.

Liggins' February trial on first-degree murder, kidnapping and other charges is expected to last three weeks.
