Murder of innocents is not Islam

As I awoke in the early morning to eat and pray prior to another day of fasting for Ramadan, I was shocked to learn of the horrific and senseless act that took place in Orlando, Florida.

The Quran clearly condemns such violent acts, stating, "Whosoever killed a person ... It shall be as if he killed all mankind (5:32)".

And the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) taught, "If any one of you is fasting, let him not utter obscenities or act in an ignorant manner, and if anyone insults him or want to fight with him, let him say, I am fasting."

As a Muslim born in this country, I am a proud American and value all of the freedoms that are extended to me. No individual should be treated differently based on their race, religion, sexual orientation, or ethnicity. These are the real teachings of Islam, and I will continue to defend the religion no matter the actions of these cowards.

Hate will never prevail, God willing. I will keep praying for those affected as I have since I learned of this tragedy and also for those who think they are practicing Islam.
