Streamwood Memorial Day observance: Saturday & Sunday, at the Veterans Memorial, 301 E. Irving Park Road. A POW/MIA candlelight vigil is held the evening of Saturday, May 28, and a vigil guard marches past the monoliths all night until they are formally relieved at 11 a.m. Sunday, May 29, for the official ceremony. Arlington Heights Memorial Day parade & ceremony: 97th annual parade steps off at 9:30 a.m. Monday from village hall, 33 S. Arlington Heights Road. West on Sigwalt to Dunton, north on Dunton to Euclid, west on Euclid to Chestnut and south to Memorial Park. Mount Prospect Memorial Day parade: 9:30 a.m. Monday from Emerson Street and Busse Avenue, south on Emerson to Lincoln Street to the Veterans Memorial Band Shell at Lions Park for a special ceremony. Bartlett Memorial Day Walk and Remembrance: 10 a.m. Monday at Bartlett Park, Oak and North avenues. Starts with a 10 a.m. American Legion flag retirement ceremony. Hanover Park Memorial Day Ceremony: 10 a.m. Monday, village hall, 2121 W. Lake St., Hanover Park. The Veterans Committee will hold the event at Veterans Memorial Plaza in front of the Municipal Building. Free. www.hpil.org.

Palatine Memorial Day ceremony and parade: 10 a.m. Monday service at Hillside Cemetery on Smith Street leads into 10:15 a.m. parade sponsored by American Legion Post 690, with color guards, police and fire, community leaders, youth groups and the Fremd High School marching band. From Cornell Avenue, it goes north on Smith Street, east on Robertson, south on Brockway and then east on Wood to the Veterans Memorial in Community Park, Palatine and Oak. Short program at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial. Another ceremony follows at 12:15 p.m. at the Legion Memorial in Towne Square, 150 W. Palatine Road. Hoffman Estates/Schaumburg Memorial Day: 10 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Monday. Memorial observance starts at 10 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial outside the Hoffman Estates Police Department, 411 W. Higgins Road. Then go to St. Peter Lutheran Church, 202 E. Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg for a 10:45 a.m. ceremony hosted by Schaumburg Mayor Al Larson and Hoffman Estates Mayor Bill McLeod, speakers, and more. A picnic for all guests follows in the St. Peter picnic grove. Chester Grzybowski, 104, who served in World War II in the South Pacific, is expected to be present as a special guest. Barrington Memorial Day parade: Steps off at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Cook and Main streets, residents and members of the VFW then walk to Evergreen Cemetery for a short service to commemorate U.S. men and women who died in service to their country. Free. www.barrington-il.gov.
