Veterans Week to kick off at Aurora library

Aurora Public Library is partnering with the Aurora Veterans Advisory Council to bring Vets Week activities to the Richard and Gina Santori Public Library of Aurora.

The Vets Week Kickoff is planned for 5 p.m. Monday, May 23, in the Santori Library's Dunham Atrium, 101 S. River St.

The Kane County Sheriff's Office Honor Guard will post the colors prior to the unveiling of the POW/MIA Fallen Comrade table. A short ceremony explaining the meaning of the items on the table will follow the unveiling. Local Boy Scouts will collect torn and tattered flags to be disposed of properly.

The Santori Library will be festooned for the week with banners, flags and displays including a number of "Quilts of Valor," which are made by local quilters who are dedicated to "cover service members and veterans touched by war with comfort and healing."

Library staff members will wear red, white and blue Tuesday, May 24 in support of Vets Week.

On Friday, May 27, musical group Sweet Reminder will perform from 1 to 2 p.m. in Rooms 125 and 126 at the Santori Library. Legacy Girls singers Nancy Baumet and Dia Madden will deliver their renditions of musical treasures from the 1930s, 40s and 50s including such favorites as "Fly Me to the Moon" and "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy."

Veterans and their families, along with the general public, are invited to the 1 p.m. concert, after which there will be special recognition for several local veterans from 2 to 3 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
